Lincoln

Lincoln got its start in agriculture. Its first inhabitants in 1851 were farmers. In 1861 the California Central Railroad came to the area and things started to pick up. The main responsible for this was Charles Lincoln Wilson, and the town was named for him. Today this quaint community is known locally as Zebratown, although no one seems to know why. The town’s high school mascot is even the zebra. Lincoln was officially incorporated into the county of Placer on August 18th, 1890 and continued to be a place focused largely on agriculture until its massive layer of subterranean clay was discovered and used to make quality terra cotta products that grace many of America’s most famous buildings today. As transportation became more and more convenient, the town’s proximity to Sacramento also became a draw. The town’s roots are still visible in the historic downtown area, and in the close knit community that still exists today.
